I couldn't tell you whether ads following content has been done before but I'm sure there must be an analogy in there somewhere - local or niche advertisers following the mighty shark of the content like those things that follow mighty sharks. You may have to upgrade the lillypad to a some sort of seeweed though.

Definitley keen on Microformats. I believe that the next version of Firefox has built in support for hCard, hCalendar and others. Looking at a news item as structured data has potential for syndication even if it is just round a network of loosely related sites at first.

The fact that the data is structured or marked up in a certain way does not mean that it has to be displayed in the same way from site to site either. Which is nice.

You'll be wanting a news microformat. You could embed your author's credentials and signature, keywords, geocoding etc while providing a news items in a preset pattern which would make them easier to grab by another site and spreading your billable content far and wide.

I suppose if you were to take this a bit further the information in the microformat could mean that ads could follow your content around, cropping up wherever it does. Count the click-throughs or views and bill accordingly. Advertisers would then be in a position to sign up to advertise with the big names or the niche specialists whichever suited them best.
